Technically, AJ is referring to the sisters’ next album when she says this—the as-yet-unnamed record they just recorded in a five-day sprint at Los Angeles’s Sunset Sound—but the line fits here too well to ignore. “That’s the goal,” she says, “more intimate, more intimate, more intimate.”

“More intimate” has become something of a maxim for the sisters as the musical project they started almost two decades ago continues to evolve. And it takes a certain bravery, especially for two people who experienced commercial success so young. Both Aly and AJ spun their child stardom into acting careers, but they were slower to return to music, stalling out for a while after a break with an early record label. Then, in 2017, their Ten Years E.P. brought them careening back onto the scene, and they’ve kept up their momentum ever since, all while hewing closer and closer to what feels authentic. They’ve experimented, taking their sound in a darker, dance-pop direction, then relaxing it into something more country-adjacent. With every release, they feel more like themselves. 

“We didn’t always have complete and total freedom in what we wanted to do,” Aly says. “Now that we have that, all bets are off.” 

We are thrilled to announce we will be performing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Valentine’s Day, February 14th.

Vanity Fair has premiered the new Aly & AJ video for Attack of Panic, saying,

“Shooting on film gives the video a grainy quality that feels heavier than digital might. Parts are half-lit or backlit, and other parts are overlaid with a red wash that recalls the mindfuck final scene in 2018’s Suspiria (also, coincidentally, set in Berlin). Their voices float in the background, airy and spooky in a minor key, set against a deep techno beat. A clamoring synthesizer comes in at the chorus, a little like church bells, but in Mordor. It feels, roughly, like a panic attack.

The Suspiria and Shining interpretations are mine, but “Attack of Panic” does have cinematic roots. Just before writing it, Aly and AJ watched 1986’s Labyrinth for the first time back-to-back with Return to Oz, which was made the year prior. AJ describes both movies as “bizarre, psychedelic,” Aly as “terrifying,” but both were in awe of the “weird ’80s electronic” scores. While they and their collaborators—CJ Baran and Ben Romans, whom they met backstage at a Carly Rae Jepsen concert—wrote “Attack of Panic,” they played scenes from Labyrinth on loop in the background, hoping that the song’s production would “hold up to a montage of Jennifer Connelly running around a party and David Bowie trying to chase her,” AJ said. “And it did.” Both sisters urged me to play the ball scene from Labyrinth on mute, with “Attack of Panic” running over the top. I did, and my brain exploded. The two synced up perfectly.”

‘Now that “Her Smell” is in theaters, Alex Ross Perry has moved on to his next musical venture: the video for Aly & AJ’s “Church.” The new single from the sibling duo’s forthcoming album “Sanctuary” marks Perry’s second collaboration with the sisters, the first being the video for 2017’s “Take Me.” Shot on 16mm at the Mayan Revival Samuel-Novarro House in Los Angeles’ Loz Feliz neighborhood, it isn’t the last time Perry will collaborate with Aly & AJ — they’ll next work together on the visuals for an upcoming single from “Sanctuary.” That project will take place in New York to “spotlight the contrasts between the two coasts.”‘

The Church music video directed by Alex Ross Perry has arrived.

The FADER writes: “Aly & AJ still make damn good pop music. When they returned last year with their first project in over a decade, it felt less like a comeback but rather a full arrival. The same can be said about their new single “Church,” which dropped a few weeks back: the hooks are as undeniably huge as anything the Michalka sisters have offered throughout their career, but the music feels decidedly more opinionated and lived-in.

Perhaps the most seismic shift in the new material comes from the context surrounding it. It goes without saying that we’re living in a totally different world than when “Potential Breakup Song” hit airwaves in 2007. Landmarks are burning, ice caps are melting, hopelessness is in abundance. Faced with a revolving door of hedonistic coping mechanisms, Aly & AJ’s’ proposal is a simple one: in a world that continues to rob us of sacred spaces, maybe we just have to make them for ourselves.

In their gorgeous new video for “Church,” debuting today, that space is the Samuel-Novarro residence, Lloyd Wright’s 1928 art deco masterpiece that’s housed 90 years of Hollywood mystique. They enlisted Her Smell director Alex Ross Perry to capture what he describes as an ‘uneasy feeling of creeping west coast voyeurism.’ “

Aly & AJ have delivered the bewitching visuals for the Take Me music video, crafted by visionary director and screenwriter Alex Ross Perry (Listen Up Phillip, Queen of Earth), with cinematography from the talented Sean Price Williams (Good Time). With the streets of Los Angeles as the backdrop, the video features appearances from actresses Amanda Crew (Silicon Valley) and Madeline Zima (Twin Peaks), and actor Josh Pence (La La Land) who fall prey to the musical duo’s blood lust.

The sisters added, “Staged and paced by Alex Ross Perry (director) and Sean Price Williams (cinematographer) in a midcentury home at odds with vampiric life, both pushed the video into the genre territory of our 80’s dreams as funneled through the minds of Chris Horan (stylist) and Elissa Ruminer (hair and makeup) with inspiration and armor from the clothing of Harris Reed.”

Director Alex Ross Perry shares the story behind the visuals for “Take Me”, noting – “When Aly&AJ reached out to me, blind, on Instagram, I assumed there had been some mistake. Nobody I had ever met before could possibly want to work with Sean Price Williams and myself badly enough that they would fly us to Los Angeles and agree with our insane idea to shoot a music video on standard 16mm film. Turns out, this was just a sign of their collaborative nature and the beginning of a process that creatively volleyed back and forth, much like my back and forth flights across the country.”

He continues – “The opportunity to shoot in Los Angeles for the first time, in a wonderful location that I could never dream of having access to (and just up the road from the house where Sharon Tate was murdered) was one I couldn’t imagine passing up. Shooting a vampire themed video is difficult for somebody like myself who ceases to function after eleven p.m. but the enthusiasm and positivity of Aly & AJ motivated the entire crew and resulted in a video full of images I am incredibly proud of.”
